Introducing the Candidate Template

THE IDEA:

After more than a decade of working as a political advisor and eight years of building and designing websites, creating campaign websites just makes sense to me.

But for candidates in the 2024 Queensland Local Government elections, paying a website designer to design a custom website professionally is quite possibly a stretch too far. Candidates must adhere to strict spending caps for their campaigns this election cycle, and for the average candidate, that cap is just $15,000.

Yet, now local media coverage has all but disappeared, the campaign website is more important than ever. A good campaign website allows candidates to connect with voters and convey their policies and values. It's in the interests of good government that we know what we're voting for.

That's why I have created the Candidate Template. A Squarespace website template that allows candidates to take my experience and insights and transform the template into their own campaign site without the high cost of hiring a website designer.

THE FEATURES:

Designed for campaigns

The Candidate Template features everything Queensland Local Government Candidates should have on their campaign website and allows them to:

  • Highlight their priorities and policies

  • Publish campaign news and announcements

  • Build an email list

  • Share their story and what makes them the best candidate for the electorate

  • Connect with supporters who want to volunteer on the campaign

  • Effectively collect ECQ-required donation information, as well as donations

The Template includes the following pages:

  • Home

  • About

  • Contact

  • Campaign News

  • Donation pages
These sample pages show a system for collecting required donor information, as well as the actual donations.

Clear Content Checklist

The Content Checklist outlines exactly what text or copy, images and branding is required to personalise the template. For political rookies, this is a handy guide to what information and images they should have for their campaign.

Quick and easy to edit

Candidates can quickly transform the template into a personalised site by replacing images, updating text, and altering the colours and fonts.

The template comes with access to an online guide that walks users through the process of personalising the template step by step.

Confident Squarespace users can also adjust the layout, change the order of page sections and further customise their site.

An organised online hub

With Squarespace, candidates can manage their website, domain, Google Workspace, form responses, and email marketing from one account.

The sample donations system built into the website also demonstrates how campaigns can collect the required information from donors to comply with election law.
